Mariluz Montesinos was the first person in the world to consider finding out how local translation works in people with Down’s Syndrome, a process which is carried out in the neurones and is activated during learning. This was in 2006, when she received support from the French foundation Jerôme Lejeune, world leader in encouraging research into this genetic disorder. Today nearly a decade later, she has tested mice with Down´s Syndrome and confirmed that, effectively, there is an anomaly during this process and that a drug like rapamycin, which is already used to treat other disorders, could improve it. The Jerôme Lejeune Foundation has provided her team at the Department of Medical Physiology and Biophysics with support once more to go one step further and spread this research to human cells and check if, in the future, a drug could be used to improve memory and learning in people with Down´s Syndrome.
