Miguel Martínez, pioneering microbiology to combat tuberculosis

He has been interested in Science since he was a little boy. Miguel Martínez liked to pretend that he ran his own lab, and that interest for Science continued to grow, focusing on Microbiology. He specialized in this field in the De las Nieves Hospital in Granada, and he currently works in the Torrecárdenas Hospital of Almería, where he leads a pioneering project in Spain about tuberculosis. He uses bacteria to control this disease within the province with the highest prevalence of tuberculosis in Andalusia. Thanks to his biomolecular strategy, the treatments received by patients have been improved, as well as the effectiveness of a process, which used to take months and that currently only takes a few hours, consisting of the diagnosis and tracing of the source of infection of this disease to prevent its spreading. This innovative strategy is going to be spread to the rest of Andalusia. In addition, other regions such as Catalonia have already shown interest in it.
